GPU tuning for mining: a safe starting point

How undervolting and clock tuning cut power and heat without losing hashrate, and how to tune without hurting stability.

Why tune at all

Out of the box, a GPU is tuned for bursty gaming loads, not the steady all-day grind of mining. A little tuning can cut power draw and temperature significantly while keeping almost all of your hashrate, which directly improves your profit because power is your main running cost.

Undervolting is the big win

The single most effective change is usually undervolting: running the card at a lower voltage for the same clock. It drops power and heat sharply with little or no loss of hashrate, and it makes the card quieter and longer-lived. Lower the voltage in small steps and test for stability after each one.

Tune in small steps and watch stale shares

Change one thing at a time and give it a few hours. Watch two numbers on your dashboard: your hashrate should hold, and your stale or rejected share count should stay low. If either worsens, your last step was too aggressive; step back. A slightly conservative tune that runs for weeks beats an aggressive one that crashes.

Keep it cool and stable

Good airflow does half the work: a cooler card holds higher clocks and lasts longer. Aim for a tune you can leave running unattended for days without a single crash or a climbing stale rate. Stability over the highest possible number is what actually earns money.
