Blockchain

A shared, append-only ledger secured by consensus.

A blockchain is a public ledger of transactions, grouped into blocks that each link to the one before. No central server controls it; the network agrees on its contents through a consensus mechanism.

Because rewriting a block would mean redoing all the work stacked on top of it, a proof-of-work blockchain gets harder to tamper with the deeper a transaction is buried.
