Cryptography is the mathematics of securing information. In crypto it underpins your keys, the digital signatures that authorize spending, and the hash functions that link blocks together.
Zero-knowledge proofs, which Pearl uses, are an advanced form of cryptography: they prove a computation was done correctly without revealing or redoing it.
