How hard it currently is to find a block.
Network difficulty measures how hard it is to find a block right now. The network adjusts it automatically so blocks keep arriving at a steady pace as mining power joins or leaves.
Your earnings depend on your hashrate relative to the whole network, so when difficulty rises because others joined, your slice of the rewards shrinks a little.
