Fork
A split or upgrade in a blockchain's rules.
A fork is a change to a blockchain's rules. A soft fork tightens rules in a backward-compatible way; a hard fork changes them incompatibly and can split a chain into two.
Some well-known coins began as forks: Litecoin and many others started from Bitcoin's codebase, then diverged.
