Hash

A fixed-size fingerprint of any data.

A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint produced by running data through a one-way function. The same input always gives the same hash, and the tiniest change gives a completely different one.

Hashing links blocks together and identifies transactions. Classic mining is a race to find an input whose hash meets a target; Pearl replaces that race with useful computation.
