Mining
Doing the work that produces blocks and earns coins.
Mining is using a computer to perform the work that produces a blockchain's blocks, and being paid in that coin for doing it. It is how proof-of-work chains stay secure and how new coins are issued.
On Pearl the work is useful computation (a matrix multiply) rather than a throwaway hash, so the energy does something beyond securing the chain.
