A mining farm is a dedicated facility that runs many rigs together, with the power, cooling and networking to keep them online. Farms benefit from cheap electricity and bulk operations.
You do not need a farm to mine: a single GPU pointed at a pool earns its share. Farms simply scale the same idea up.
