Namecoin (NMC) was one of the first altcoins, built to store names and data (such as a decentralized domain system) on a blockchain. It uses SHA-256 and is merge-mined with Bitcoin.
Merge mining lets Bitcoin miners secure Namecoin at the same time, earning both.
