Proof of Stake (PoS)
Securing a chain with locked coins instead of work.
Proof of stake replaces mining with staking: participants lock up coins for the right to propose and validate blocks, and misbehaviour can cost them their stake. It uses far less energy than proof of work.
There is no mining on a proof-of-stake chain; you need coins to take part, not hardware. Pearl uses proof of work, so it is mineable.
